Words to Know

  • Position Paper: Brief report and summary of the topic, background, and the country’s position. For more information on position papers, visit our page.
  • Background Guide: Guide written by the committee staff to explain the committee and topic and serve as a foundation for more research. Typically the most important resource when preparing for a conference. You can find your committee’s background guide in the committee description.
  • Dais: Chair(s) and Vice Chairs running the committee. Typically found at a table in the front of a room.
  • Placard: Name card used in committee for voting and choosing who speaks during debates.
  • Speaker’s List: List of delegates wishing to make a brief speech. Typically done to open debate at the beginning of the committee or topic.
